Scholarship Information and Criteria

Each year, law students at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University apply to receive student scholarships ranging from roughly $1,000 to $8,650. Scholarships are awarded based on an application and an essay. Scholarship winners are also assigned a lawyer mentor through our UMBA Pipeline Program (sponsored by Holland & Hart).

PURPOSE
The purpose of the Utah Minority Bar Association Scholarship Program is to assist law students from the S.J. Quinney College of Law and the J. Reuben Clark Law School who have a demonstrated record of service to racial and ethnic minority communities in completing their legal education.

UMBA PIPELINE
Scholarship winners will be matched with attorneys from Holland & Hart who will provide educational seminars and ongoing mentoring relationships. This program gives students the skills and contacts they will need to become great attorneys and future leaders of UMBA and the Utah State Bar

ELIGIBILITY 
Must be enrolled in law school for the 2023-2024 academic year and must be a current member of the law school’s minority organization. 

APPLICATION DEADLINE
Applications are due by 5:00pm (Mountain Time) on Monday, October 9, 2023.

If selected, awards will be presented at our annual scholarship and awards banquet on Thursday, November 9, 2023. The event will be held in-person at the Little America Hotel located at 500 South Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Awards are selected by a review committee appointed by UMBA and evaluated on the following criteria:

1. Future potential to positively impact and represent Utah's racial and ethnic communities in the candidate's field of practice

2. Academic Achievement

3. Personal Qualities and Strengths

4. Letter(s) of Recommendation

5. Demonstrated record of service to racial and ethnic communities
    

Scholarship winners will be notified prior to the Banquet.
